Gia says both sides of her family danced and that her grandmother led the Midwest Buddhist Temple minyo group for more than 30 years. Her first performance came at Chicago’s Field Museum at five; at seven, she began Nihon-buyō with Fujima Sensei of the school now known as Shubukai.
That lineage is not a footnote to television. It is still on the program: Wednesday Japanese-dance LIVEs, the Okaeri Ondo she co-led in Little Tokyo, and a feed where Ubud travel, drag, music, and family-taught movement share one frame.
